What are the Different Variations of Edge Protection?

There are three critical types of temporary roof Edge Protection available for people working at height. You may hire any of the three variations that we supply for any company building project or property:

Class A

Class A edge protection allows you to protect flat surfaces or slopes up to 10 degrees. Class A offers all possible resistance to static loads based on the requirement to support an individual leaning against, stumbling into or walking beside the edge protection layer.

Class B

Class B protects from any sloping surfaces generally around 10 to 30 degrees, and 60 degrees for slopes that are 2m. It offers much resistance to static and low dynamic loads based on requirements to support a person walking beside, leaning on or falling into the edge protection.

Class C

Class C offer protection to steeply sloping surfaces. These surfaces may be from 30 to 45 degrees and 5m slopes from up to 60 degrees. Class C provides resistance to any high dynamic loads only and bases solely on the requirements to contain a person sliding down the surface.

Collapsible Guardrail and Handrail

Collapsible Guardrails are designed to be lightweight and completely fold flat when unused to retract into an out of sight position. These are incredibly popular for historical architecture such as heritage sites, old university buildings and churches, because of the folding design. They are also versatile in that operatives can utilise them for other visually sensitive facilities, for example, buildings with modern architecture or art.

Fixed Guardrail and Handrail

These have a design that provides 24/7 edge protection for working at height personnel. Systems like these have been permanently fixed to parapets, and they continuously prove to prevent falls from great heights. The systems get set onto tops of parapet walls, and coping stones secure them in place, depending solely on the condition of the walls. When you use an allen key, you can often adjust the height despite being permanently fixed.

Freestanding Guardrail and Handrail

Freestanding Guardrails have a design that protects those working at height without puncturing the roof's surface during an installation. The reason it cannot do so is due to the solutions counterbalance design. There is 20kg of weights on each section of the Guardrail that prevent it. The freestanding system is highly versatile, and qualified personnel may help move or remove it quite easily.

Edge protection Barriers

Steel Mesh Barriers

The steel mesh barrier can be used in place of tube and fit scaffolding. It is very simple to assemble, and its bright red colour provides a clear warning of edge hazards. This system offers a safe option for temporary edge protection on mezzanine floors and roofs with a pitch of less than 30 degrees. It is widely recognized in the industry that mesh barriers are more suitable than traditional tube and fit scaffolding because:

  • Guardrails, toe board, and mesh barrier combined in one product
  • Closed return for enhanced debris containment
  • Lightweight, versatile system for quick installation
  • Designed and manufactured in compliance with EN 13374, Class A and B

The steel mesh barrier can also be adjusted in height without dismantling. This allows the barrier to be installed on a steel beam or concrete surface and then easily raised or lowered as needed.

Net Barriers

Pro Netting Solutions is an approved installer for Combisafe's Temporary Fall Prevention Systems. The Net Barrier System, widely used across the UK, provides a lightweight, practical, and safe solution for various edge protection needs. This system complies with EN13374 temporary edge protection standards, and the barrier nets are subjected to the same stringent measures as our fall arrest nets.

The Net Barrier is suitable for various structures, from simple large bay warehouses to curved standing seam roofs on steel frames, and even roofs with complex access needs and overhangs, such as the Arsenal Emirates Stadium in North London.

The nets extend up to 2 meters above the finished roof and can span up to 10 meters between supports. Being a modular system with small component parts, no large scaffold poles are required.

The Safety Net Barrier System is installed with ease as parts can be hoisted up and therefore the hours spent and the risk associated with working on exposed edges when installing traditional tube and fitting scaffold is greatly reduced.

Once erected, the net system allows work to continue around the building without obstruction. Before any installation, we can produce design sketches and calculations to verify system integrity. When combined with safety nets, it provides total encapsulation and an element of debris containment.
